Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley grow ...

"Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow
Do you, or I, or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans, and barley grow?"

So goes the children's simple little song, but as the Wheel of the Year has turned again in the last few days, we are once again witnessing planting coming to fruition and harvest is just around the corner.

We decided to play truant from food shopping yesterday and took ourselves and the mutt on a yomp over yonder fields.  The weather was perfect for walking; dry (after torrential downpours the night before) and bright, with a breeze which was strong enough to blow the branches around but also gentle enough to cool the air, making our walk refreshing and pleasurable.

It was a day of huge skies:-

Promises of autumnal feasts:-

Ripening harvests:-

Of dappled sunlight:-

Eye-popping yellow wildflowers, loads and loads of them, absolutely smothered with bees and butterflies - shame the varmints refused to stay still for more than a millisecond!

More wildflowers ....

Of hide and seek and 'where's Dad gone?;

A thistledown blowing day.

And home-made pizza for tea!

See you soon

With love xx

  3. Homemade pizza is the best. You learn something new every day tho, as we thought the song was 'the oats and beets and barley grow'!

    1. It is indeed. Autumn is my very favourite season as I'm a September baby but I don't want Summer to haste away just yet!

  5. We did the same the other day, harvesting nearly here. I love to hear the combines working late into the night, love a lot less the accompanying thunder flies!

    1. I enjoy watching them from our bedroom window - same path every year but just another way of marking the changing season.

  6. Isn't it amazing what a few words can conjure up? My kids (who are now 24 and 21)sung that song constantly on the run up to harvest and I just know I'll be humming it for the rest of the day, driving everyone mad! (Still it is better than yesterday's song - why I was singing 'Remember you're a Womble' was anyone's guess...). Love your dog, by the way.

  7. I always love your posts about the onset of Autumn and will forgive you for making my summer seem a bit shorter! :) It doesn't seem any time at all since we broke up and yet it's not that long before I'll be driving back to work and seeing how the trees have changed colour in those few short weeks.

You have lovely walks over the fields don't you? You have a handsome beast there and I don't mean the one hiding in the field!

    And..(sJ!) that pizza looked scrummy.
