Favourite Winter Poems

I thought I'd share two of my very favourite winter poems with you today.

The first one is very evocative of primary school days as we had to learn it verbatim for a performance.  This was probably my first experience of  Shakespeare! I can still see my old teacher, Mrs Williams - a plump and jolly Welsh woman with a shock of of curly black hair and a benign expression, nodding her head as we chanted along.  Funny how things stick in your head isn't it?!   I think it struck a chord with me as its a little 'dark' - I always thought it was a bit of a spooky poem!!

Winter

(From "Love's Labour's Lost")
When icicles hang by the wall,
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipp’d and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
                Tu-whit;
Tu-who, a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

When all aloud the wind doth blow,
And coughing drowns the parson’s saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marion’s nose looks red and raw,
When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
                Tu-whit;
Tu-who, a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

The next one is by Robert Frost. I stumbled across it in a Jilly Cooper novel of all places and
was struck by it. I really don't know why - all I know is that the last three lines make my heart
swell!

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Humbled

Something a little different for me today.  Along with some work colleagues, I visited a local women's refuge which provides support, shelter, care and assistance to women who are victims of domestic violence.  They had requested some assistance with making their premises suitably festive for their service users.  We had collected lots and lots of unwanted decorations, tinsel, trees, fairy lights and ornaments over the last couple of weeks, and went to work to "christmassify" (!) the rooms in question.  We managed to transform the rooms with lots of sparkle and fairy dust, and hopefully this will bring a little cheer to the women and children using the centre.

We chatted to some of the staff and it was clear that they were really dedicated to and justifiably proud of their cause.  We were told that they had around 50 women who were currently receiving their assistance, along with around 100 children.  The centre had collected donations of toys, and these would be made available for the Mums to come to choose, wrap and which would then be delivered to them by the refuge workers on Christmas eve so that the children would not suspect a thing.  What a wonderful thing to do.

Whilst I was there I was intrigued to see some of the art work created by the service users.   They had a wonderful 'wishing tree' made simply from wire and wrapped in knitting yarn, hung with messages and wishes.  You will appreciate that I didn't take any photographs but there were some very poignant messages I can assure you and they touched me greatly.

The refuge expects to be at it's busiest over the coming weeks as the stresses of the festive period take their toll.

We walked away from the centre today with the good wishes and thanks of the refuge staff  ringing in our ears.   I felt a little bit fake really.  We had spent a pleasant four hours away from mundane desk jobs.  My colleagues and I had a giggle, wearing silly reindeer antlers and drinking coffee.  All we had done, really, was to hang up a few strands of tinsel and decorate a couple of trees but they were so grateful to us for doing it.  It isn't much to do in the grand scheme of things is it?

We were very quiet on the drive back to the office; each of us, I think, considering what we had and what we could be thankful for.

Two Blocks of Five!

Yes -  It's just  ten working days of the year left to go. Or 2 x 5 days. Come on.... we can do this guys!

**Runs up and down stairs with a towel round neck in a Rocky Balboa style and shadow boxes the Johnny Rotten poster hung outside the bathroom**

**Collapses in a heap gasping for breath**

Ahem.

So.  It's Sunday evening yet again.  It's going to be even MORE difficult to get up tomorrow morning because Lovely Man has got a whole four days off - and I have no holiday left.  Sniff.  The plus side is though that he won't be having to go to work when I'm going to bed. Yay!    He's also going to tackle decorating the lounge.  We've been doing a lot of preparation today.  I hate that bit and would quite happily slapdash over it and hope for the best, but Man won't allow it and has/will be stripped/stripping and sanded back everything to within an inch of its life.  Preparation is they key of course. *scuffs feet childishly* Still bliddy boring though!

I'm keeping everything crossed that we will get our living room finished in time for C-mas so we can both have a lovely chill out without having to look at bare walls and scuffed paintwork.  I have every faith!

I found these pics on the t'interweb today.  They came up in my Facebook feed and made me chuckle so I thought I'd share them with you.

This first one may be quite topical if the weather forecast in the weekend papers was to be believed that a Siberian weather front is heading our way, equipped with arctic temperatures of epic proportions, snow inches deep and icy blast winds.  This does, however, seem at odds with the forecast on the telly - which isn't at all bad for this week!  Who knows what Momma Nature has up her sleeve.  I don't mind snow - but if its going to happen then I don't want any pussy footing around with a couple of centimetres here and a bit of frost there.   I want drifts up the front door which will prevent egress for at least a week!

The second sums up my feeling about the forthcoming period.

Hee heee.

Hope your weekend was cosy and jolly and that you're all beginning to fa -la -effin' - la your heads off!!

Much love!

This week ....

I have mostly been:- (in no particular order)

Coughing. A lot.

Candle burning.

Texting friends.

Smiling.

Forgetting to put the lottery on for our syndicate at work EEEEK!! (I was forgiven, thankfully).

Drinking black forest hot choccie out of unfeasibly heavy cups.

Crying (pah!)

Nail painting.

Listening to Linkin Park.  Loudly.

Listening to Radio 4.

(Linkin Park were not on Radio 4 oddly enough).

Rescuing 7,394 single socks from the furry jaws of doom.

Similarly, rescuing 7,394 tea towels from the furry jaws of doom.

Reconciling relationships with a friend.

Forgiving.

Working.

Sunrise snapping.

Retrieving a pair of pants which had sadly not escaped the furry jaws of doom.

Loving my man.

Ordering C-word gifts from the internet.

Having my hair cut.

Spending far too much time dripping about on Facebook.  Methinks a New Year ban shall be put in force.  It has to be the biggest waste of my time ever!

Drinking coffee.

Listening to wind chimes tinkling in the breeze.

Hibernating.

Failing in a massive way at making my own C-word cards.

Trying not to succumb to too many festive office treats.

Trying to convince myself that I'm looking forward to C-word.  Self is remaining unconvinced.

Baulking at the cost of everything and becoming a tad concerned that I am turning into Scrooge.

Listening to a Ralph McTell album (yes really!) and actually enjoying it (Yes really!).

Loving my family.

Despairing at the state of the house.

Rejoicing in the delivery of my shed!

Cooking a bloody fabulous veggie jalfrezi

Daydreaming about singing like Florence (out of Florence and the Machine).

Trying to justify (aided and abetted by the Man) that dipping into the C-word chocolate is not an arrestable offence if committed by consenting adults.

How was your week?!!

Just another tequila sunrise ...

Another stunning sunrise this morning... sorry if you're getting bored of them!

No photoshopping, just an open window, a zoom lens and Mama Nature putting on the style!

I have no words.

A thought for Wednesday.

Feeling Blessed but Blue ...

It's been a funny old day today.  I've had three lovely things happen.

Firstly, we were told at work that we were being given a 'thank you' gift - our choice of either a hamper of festive goodies or a case of wine, each to the value of £100.   I'm choosing the hamper as Lovely Man and I aren't big wine drinkers.  The hamper itself actually contains three bottles of the stuff anyway which is more than enough and will be a nice contribution to the festive table at my brother's on C-word day.

Secondly, THIS fantabulous item was awaiting me when I got home:

Ooh its so exciting!! This ver' posh looking gift bag is crammed full of 12 gifts for my delight and delectation! (and no - the empty cola bottle is not one of them!).

My group of online friends always do a bit of an advent calendar type gift every December and this year is no exception.  We're doing the 12 days of advent and so each of us have been matched up with a swapee and have sent each other 12 little gifts to open during December.  Something to look forward to isn't it?!  I couldn't resist a bit of a rattle and a feel but have now hidden them away out of sight so I'm not tempted to accidentally rip a little of the packaging!  That would never do!

Thirdly.......... my biggest and bestest ever present arrived today from my wondrous partner.  Its ..............

SHED!!!

hehe...... yep - a shed all of my very own!  I can't believe it!  At last I will be able to move in all of my crafting stash and will be able to craft away to my heart's content without having to tidy it away, I shall have access to all of my 'stuff' and not have to ferret around in boxes underneath other boxes and get annoyed with papers and card being damaged.  This may seem like a massive extravagance but, dear readers, if you knew how small Peapods actually is, you'd understand the concept behind the big spend!  When I'm feeling slightly more brave, I'll take some photos of the chaos which abounds in our home.  It's not pretty I can assure you!

It's going to be insulated and lined so it will be cosy and dry, have a heat and light source run through to it and I shall prettify it with curtains and cushions and paint it and it shall be ALLLLL mine!  I need a name for it.  Any ideas?

Such a lovely lot of lovely stuff.

But do you know what?  It's just stuff isn't it?  And I'd happily hand all of this lovely stuff over without a second's hesitation to someone more deserving if I could just have my Dad back.  I've not stopped crying today.  It's been a bad day and I miss him terribly.  I rang his old mobile phone number this evening to listen to his voicemail just to hear his voice.  I needed to do it.. I'd forgotten what he sounded like and he's only been gone five months. Is that weird?  Weird or not, it was strangely comforting and whilst it solves nothing, if that's all I have then I'm glad of it at this time.   I know it's probably pre-Christmas blues.  It will be the first one without him.  "Firsts" are always very difficult when a loved one has passed and this is a biggie.  We shall get through it I'm sure.  I wish I'd left him more voicemails when he was alive, just telling him how much I loved him.  I was tempted to leave one when I listened earlier, but I'm sure he knows.

See you soon

Sensory Sunday the Second of December!

Hi everyone!

Firstly a huge HELLOOOO to my new follower, Becky.  Its so good to 'see' you here and thank you for following my blog.  I shall be along to pay you a visit very shortly. :)  Thanks also to those of you reading and commenting.  It makes my day to see your comments and seeing the reader-count climbing.  Thank you!

I had an absolutely rubbish night's sleep last night.  My head was whirring with "stuff".  I tried to read my way through it but couldn't concentrate.  I think I finally fell asleep at about three, woke again at five, and the on the half hour until seven am when I promptly fell asleep until eight and then gave up! I got up then and made poached eggs on muffins and coffee and retired back to bed where oblivious Man was just waking up!

All that awakeness !  And then I fell asleep just in time to miss this "fire in the sky":-

Luckily my next door neighbour WAS awake and took this snap on her phone of the most stunningly beautiful skies.

I've been feeling rough all weekend.  My ears are blocked and my head is fuzzy.  My throat is just beginning to get sore and so I know I'm in for a bout of something yuksome!  Typical!  I can't have any more time off work this side of c-word so its going to be a case of "dose up and get on with it" I'm afraid.

For medicinal purposes (!) I've made a big pan of mulled punch today as Mum came 'round for dinner. It's quite a steep walk from her house to ours and she was breathless and cold when she arrived; her glasses steamed up instantly as she wandered into the scented fug of the kitchen.  She was most grateful for the mug of hot, spicy apple cider I offered to her.  I had heated through a small bottle of cider which I had diluted with a large carton of winter punch from Aldi.   Some pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar, chopped apple and orange had also been added to the brew.  I've waited to sample mine until now as I'm typing this blog post and it is soooo comforting.  A veritable hug in a mug.  There really is nothing nicer when you're feeling under the weather.  I can't tolerate spirits, so a hot toddy or whiskey mack wouldn't be good for me.  This is mild and gentle and ... Oh, look - it's all gone.  How did that happen?!

Apart from cooking dinner today, I made a couple of cards - like this one!

The fairy was part of a set of stamps I picked up in a charity shop.  The images are beautiful and as you rarely see such items in charity shops I made sure I snapped it up.  The image was stamped first of all, then powdered and heat embossed before being cut out and mounted on to a serendipitous find of near matching starry paper, then again on to some mirri card.  A little bit of stickles dotted here and there glammed it up a little et voila!

As is usual at time of year, I've had candles burning all day - these orange and cinnamon ones -

Aww - you've not met my little owls have you?  I picked them up
at a boot sale earlier this year for about £1.50.  They're carved and painted and are all
individual.  I adore the way the little one is cuddling into the middle one!

and this lovely 'rhubarb and custard' scented soy candle in a little vintage ice cream sundae dish,  which I picked up a couple of weeks ago at a craft fayre.

Ah well - Sunday evening ironing looms upon us (well me anyway!).  I've worked out that I have just fifteen working days left before I break up for Yule on the 21st.  Just.  Fifteen.  Three little blocks of five days, interspersed with blissful weekends. **steels self**.   I can do this.   This is, as a very good friend agrees, "eminently do-able!"

See you soon !!

xx

Sunrise ... Sunset....

Hello bloglies.

How did the first day of December treat you then?

Here's a look into my day.  I'll let the pictures do the talking:-

Sunrise..

Simply stunning

Stark beauty

A rather sad looking reindeer at the c-word light switch on in Stourbridge today.   I wanted to take him home.

Black forest hot chocolate.  Yuletide in a mug! Enjoyment of said beverage
sadly marred by carol singers singing loudly and a pontificating preacher preaching preachily.
Pah.

Home.  Shopping unpacked, it was just too beautiful an afternoon to waste. Harvey and I went for a squelch down the field as the sun was beginning to set.

Oooh it was cold out of the sun!
Random shot of the day.  What's the story here then?  Ancient chip pan sitting about 20 feet into the field!
How queer!

Lengthening shadows...brrrr.... I can hear the kettle calling!

Ooh hello!

Patches of sunlight illuminating the trees - click the photograph to enlarge.
I managed to get back in time to deliver a bowl full of warm mash to Princess Leia who tucked in, clucking contentedly whilst I cleaned out her coop, lagged it with folded newspapers for added insulation and changed her bedding.  She was ready for roost shortly afterwards so I hope she's snuggled down in inches of cosy shavings and straw with a full, warm tummy.  I do feel sorry for her now she's on her own.

Hope your Saturday was a good one.

Wrap up and snuggle down!

Working from home

I've taken a precious day of annual leave today.  I've really struggled this week with feeling so yuk and I needed the restorative ...
